The same goes for assuming that a shop is trying to "rip you off." It is considered rude to ask, “Is the shop trying to fleece/rip me off?” You wouldn’t ask “Why are all cops pigs?” on /r/AskLeo, ask about Creationism on /r/AskScience, or talk about vaccines causing autism on /r/AskDocs.Generally there is a good reason why a repair costs what it does. Back in the 1980s we used to buy one Motor or Chilton manual for the shop, and that covered most general information we needed to be able to repair cars. New cars are far, far more complex than cars were even just 10 years ago. OUR PARTNER SUBREDDITS:The reason that you can no longer buy paper book service manuals for newer cars is because of the sheer volume of information and also the fact that it is updated constantly. Any advice you receive you must use AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Honda Service Full Of Paper
A few years later, we were getting a couple dozen CDs shipped every few months, because of the huge volume of service info being published. Then, CD versions started coming out which saved an enormous amount of space in the shop but were easier to search through in a short amount of time. We moved to microfiche manuals, which were a royal pain in the ass to read and search through. By the 1990's, we found ourselves having to buy shelves full of paper books each year, and started running out of room for them.
Honda Service Software Update Info
This is not an exaggeration the sheer volume of information for any given car includes things like service bulletins, running production modifications, programming , diagnostic, and software update info for each of the perhaps 40 computer modules found in your car part design revisions, recall notices, detailed diagnostic and test procedures for all of the complex circuits and systems in your vehicle literally hundreds of pages of electrical and wiring schematic info and tons of other things you might have never thought about. So, the reason you cannot buy professional service information in paper book form is because for your single model and year of car there would probably be dozens of those huge Chilton manual sized books, and there would be no way to quickly and easily search through them for the specific information you needed at the moment. Then, about 10 or 12 years ago there was so much info being published that even DVDs were no longer feasable, and service information moved to internet based servers, and that is the current method of information storage and delivery.
Alldata is one of the big name information services that independent repair shops use instead of buying factory information access to every manufacturer, and it is pretty complete and reasonably up to date. As you may have noticed, the DIY paper Haynes and Chilton books you can buy in the auto parts store really have no useful information at all in them and are pretty much a waste of money. As mentioned by /u/imprl59 you can get a year of Alldata access for one specific model about $30, and that should have all the information you need much of it is reprinted from the Honda factory service information.
